The day after Anna Apple was born to the earth, our Pomegrante tree joined her (Sept. 6, 2009). I am very excited about this tree, as it already has three fruits on it. Other than avacado, Poms are some of the most expensive fruits money can buy at the grocery storey ($2-3 each).

According to ehow, care should be simple in SoCal: “After planting your pomegranate tree, water thoroughly and then water again every few days for the first two weeks. After that, reduce watering to once every 10 days.

Fertilize the pomegranate tree lightly as soon as you see new growth and then three times a year—in the early spring, during the summer, and again at the end of the summer.”

According to the tags, it is vigorous, deep-rooted, tolerates wet soil, dry soil, and poor soil. An unpruned tree height of standard varieties is 18-30 feet. It creates heavy crops of sweet, crisp, flavorful apples even in the desert. It is self-fruitful, or polinated by Dorsett Golden or Einshemer.

It is a best apple for mild winter climates of southwestern United States, such as southern California. Winter chilling requirements are about 150 hours below 45 degrees.

Finally, this apple tree is a cross of Red Hadassiya and Golden Delicious made in Israel. It was introduced there in 1963.

Last time I had chemotherapy I become really sick four days after the infusion. That same day I went out and bought some Ginger Beer by the Ginger People (from Cost Plus World Market). Either that worked its magic, or my body was getting better by day 5.

Either way, I was happy with my purchase of four glass bottles for $3.99. There is no comparison between this beverage and a Vernors or Canada Dry. The ginger juice is so potent that you can feel the burn as it goes down the hatch. It tastes very clean, and the sweetener tastes very natural. It’s a different kind of sweet than fructose corn syrup. They must use real cane sugar or something like it.

By the way, despite the name, there is no fermentation or alcohol in ginger beer.

It was taking about 15 seconds to load pages on this site. I compared their shared hosting speed with Bluehost.com, and the same page took 1.5 seconds to load. In other words, this site is now served 5 to 10 times faster, and for one-third the price ($4.95 / mo. for unlimited)!

I could not be happier with the move. Bluehost has excellent customer service (GoDaddy’s was good too, but they usually tried to “upsell” me when I made a support call), and Bluehost has answered my phone calls usually within 5 minutes. Check them out.

Law practice management software is changing. New, cutting-edge web applications are bursting onto the scene, making life more simple for busy attorneys. One such program is called Rocket Matter. Rocket Matter allows lawyers to keep track of all their cases/matters, contacts, calendar, billing, accounting, time, messaging, conflicts, and more. The cost of this web service is a monthly fee.

Another service called Clio offers “Practice Management Simplified.” It provides a way for document management, scheduling, time tracking, and billing. The price for this service is also a monthly fee.

When I first started my law practice, I went with the traditional methods of local software installs. $300+ for Microsoft Office and $300+ for Quickbooks. The new web 2.0 online applications may make software packages like these obsolete in the near future.

I became a lawyer partly because I did not want to program computers full time for the rest of my career. However, a relatively new programming language has sucked me back in to the world of programming.

Ruby, more specifically, Ruby on Rails, is an amazingly intuitive and attractive programming language. It is being used to create many cutting-edge Web 2.0 websites, such as Twitter. It has powerful functions that take care of a lot of “programmer’s dirty work.”

The tools to create a Rails web application are free. For example, “Instant Rails” gives you all that you need on a Windows platform to get started. A simple, and free, text editor like Intype is all you need to write clean code.

I hope the higher education jumps on-board and starts teaching this to new programmers. The world needs more cutting-edge, Web 2.0 programmers, and less Assembly Language programmers.
